Help · TaxThe tax estimate and what to set aside
A live estimate of the year’s bill, built from your real records — so the January number is never a surprise.
Where to find it
- Open Tax in the web or mobile app — you’ll see the estimated bill for the year so far, what to set aside, CIS already paid, and any likely refund.
- Or just ask on WhatsApp: “How much tax should I set aside?” or “What’s my tax bill going to be?”
What goes into the estimate
- Income received (cash basis — counted when paid).
- Expenses by category, plus your mileage allowance.
- The personal allowance (£12,570), Income Tax bands and Class 4 National Insurance.
- CIS already deducted from your uploaded statements — subtracted from the bill, which is how the estimate can show a refund.
- Property income handled separately, Section 24 included, for landlords.
Using the set-aside number
- Check the weekly set-aside figure.
- Move that slice of each payment into a separate pot as money lands.
- Watch payments on account if your unpaid-at-source bill tops £1,000 — January can include 150% of a year’s tax.
An estimate, not advice. The figure is a live guide built from your records — the more complete your books, the better it gets. It is not tax advice, and your accountant has the final word on your actual return.
